A Rare Encounter on a Wild New Zealand Shore

Our recent journey to New Zealand led us deep into the fjords and rugged coastlines of the South Island. On a remote beach near Lake Moeraki, we came across a truly special sight—a Fiordland Crested Penguin (Tawaki) standing on the water’s edge, framed by the rampant rainforest. Unlike the icy landscapes we often associate with penguins, this elusive species prefers misty forests and rugged coastlines, making it one of the world’s most secretive and fascinating penguins. With only a few thousand pairs left, this penguin treks through dense rainforest to reach hidden nesting sites. Each year, they travel vast distances at sea, returning to the same hidden spots to breed. Covering total swimming distances of up to 6 800km (4 225 miles) over 8-10 weeks.

Seeing this penguin so close, in such an unexpected setting, was a surreal moment—one of many encounters shaping our journey to uncover the lesser-known lives of the world’s penguins.

SOCIABLE WEAVER NEST - Annalize Ferreira . Various materials are utilised for specific reasons when building the nest. Twigs and sticks are strategically placed to form both the structure and as a kind of protective 'fence' against predators like wild cats and reptiles. . The rest of the nest is stuffed with dry grass, which perfectly insulates the nest; cooling it down in the extreme Namibian mid-day heat and retains warmth once temperatures drop at night. Inside, consists of 25cm long and 7cm wide tunnels leading to various breeding chambers 10cm in diameter, which has been layered with soft hair, feathers and fur. . Captured by: Danie Ferreira

The sociable, social or common-social weaver is centrally located in the Northern Cape of South Africa and spread across the border into Botswana, Namibia and other parts of South Africa. These grassy nests often fill an entire trees branch configuration and can reach a height of 4m.
